The Whole 30

Have you heard of it? It is a wildly popular elimination type diet that I have been toying with doing for months now. It aims to eliminate most foods that can cause inflammation and encourages you to get back to whole foods, focusing on healthy protein, fats, fruits and lots and lots of veggies.

We start tomorrow.

I think that doing a reset every year is a great way to to examine your diet and see if what you are eating is serving you in all your endeavors. I always aim to eat healthy, but in reality I know that I let way too many convenience foods  and sweets take over. Life gets busy and you just start to grab whatever is closest or fastest. We need to slow down and pay attention to what we are putting into our mouths and how we feel as a result of it.

When I was first introduced to the concept of paying attention to how food makes you feel instead of how many calories or fat grams they contain I had just come off the peak of my ballet life. It was revolutionary.

One of my favorite aspects of the Whole 30 is that it is not a diet for diets sake.  One of the rules of the Whole 30 states that you are not allowed to weigh yourself or taking measurements during the Whole 30.  This won’t be hard for me because we don’t own a scale and I am not doing this diet for the sake of losing weight. However, I know that this part of the Whole 30 can be very challenging for some who are used to getting on the scale often or keeping track of numbers. The reason for this rule is that you are supposed to be focusing on how you feel.

Food is how we fuel our body and it is a great habit to develop to always be checking in with how different foods make your body feel. Do you feel Energized? Sluggish? Bloated? Jittery?

We need to become detectives of our own bodies and pay attention to how we respond to food.

The road to optimal health is a lifelong one, there is always something new to learn and something to improve upon, just like within ballet. Perhaps, that is part of the reason I am so passionate about trying to combine these two things.

I made this graphic to print out for my fridge to help me remember the basics.

I am going to do my best to keep a good record of what I am eating and how I am feeling, and I will keep you posted!
