I created this video for all of my students who have trouble remembering which way their leg circles for a rond de jambe en l’air endehor and a rond de jambe en l’air endedan.
Rond de jambe en l’air = Circle of the leg in the air
Endehor = Outward
Endedan = Inward
Typically, if you are coming from the front to the side you will be doing a rond de jambe en l’air endehor and if you are coming from the back you will do a rond de jambe en l’air endedan.
It is important to make sure you are already coming from a turned out position where the leg is already fully rotated in the hip socket and the rond de jambe en l’air is working on coming from a stable lifted supporting side and is a great exercise for your turnout muscle. As with most ballet steps there are many ways to think of the shape you are making, I have heard it described as oval or circle but I prefer to think of it as an upper case letter D. This helps to avoid letting the foot draw past your supporting knee and keeps your leg rotated in the hip socket for the entire “circle”.
